Children's & Teens Piano Lessons in Lakewood Ranch
Warm, patient lessons for children and teens, from the very first note to festival and audition pieces. Taught in person by Dr. Marjorie Hohlstein at her Lakewood Ranch home studio, with families from Bradenton and Sarasota.
01A first instrument, done right
A joyful start that lasts
Children learn best when lessons feel like play. Early on, music games, singing, and time at the keys build strong fundamentals without pressure, and reading, rhythm, and a relaxed hand position grow lesson by lesson. Skill arrives, and so does the quiet confidence that comes with it.
Every child is different, so every lesson is shaped to the one at the piano. A shy beginner and a driven teen preparing for an audition need different things, and Dr. Hohlstein has spent more than forty years learning to meet each student where they are. Families come from across Lakewood Ranch, including Country Club, Greenbrook, Summerfield, Esplanade, and The Lake Club, along with Bradenton and Sarasota.
02Before you begin
What age should a child start piano?
Most children are ready somewhere between five and seven years old, though there is no single right age. Readiness matters more than the birthday.
A child who can sit and focus for a short lesson, recognize letters and numbers, and move their fingers with some independence is usually ready to begin. Some are eager earlier, and early lessons can stay playful and ear-based until reading comes naturally. Others do better starting a little later. If you are not sure, the free trial lesson is the simplest way to find out, and Dr. Hohlstein will tell you plainly whether now is a good time to start.
03How lessons work
What to expect in the first weeks
Lessons are private and in person, one student at a time. In the early weeks, most young students focus on a few things:
- A comfortable, relaxed hand position at the keys
- Reading notes and rhythm a little more each week
- Playing simple pieces hands together, including songs they love
- Practice habits that actually work at home
- Playing for family, and for recitals or festivals when ready
As skills grow, lessons can stretch toward music theory, festivals, competitions, and conservatory auditions for students who want to take it further.
04Your teacher
Taught by Dr. Marjorie Hohlstein
Dr. Hohlstein holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance and has taught children, teens, and adults for more than forty years. Parents often mention how much their child looks forward to lessons, which is the whole point. A child who enjoys the piano is a child who keeps playing.

06Questions
Children's piano lessons, answered
What age should a child start piano lessons?
Most children are ready between about five and seven, once they can focus for a short lesson, recognize letters and numbers, and move their fingers with some independence. There is no single right age, and the free trial lesson is an easy way to find out if your child is ready.
Do we need a piano at home?
To make progress a child needs an instrument to practice on between lessons. A full-size digital piano with weighted keys is a fine place to start, and an acoustic piano is wonderful if you have one. Dr. Hohlstein is glad to advise before you buy.
How long are children's lessons, and how often?
Lesson length and frequency are set to suit the child's age and attention span, which you can talk through at the free trial. Younger beginners often do best with shorter, focused time at the piano.
Does my child need to read music already?
Not at all. Many students begin as complete beginners. Reading music is taught from the start, step by step, alongside playing by ear and good hand position.
What if my child has never shown musical talent?
Talent matters far less than curiosity and steady practice. Children grow into music when lessons are patient and encouraging, which is how every lesson here is run.
Do you prepare students for festivals, competitions, and auditions?
Yes. Students who want to go further can prepare for festivals, competitions, and conservatory auditions, along with music theory for AP exams and college study.
