For adults & returners
Adult Piano Lessons in Lakewood Ranch & Sarasota
Starting from the beginning or returning after years away, lessons are paced to your life and built around the music you actually want to play. Taught in person by Dr. Marjorie Hohlstein at her Lakewood Ranch home studio, with students from Bradenton and Sarasota.
01It is your turn
The piano you always meant to learn
Plenty of adults assume the window for learning piano has closed. It has not. Adults bring focus, patience, and a clear sense of what they want to play, and those turn out to be real advantages at the keys. With steady, manageable practice, progress comes.
Lessons are private, in person, and shaped around you. If you have always wanted to play a particular piece, that can be the goal. If you want to read music fluently and build technique that lasts, that works too. Adults come from across Lakewood Ranch, including Country Club, Greenbrook, Summerfield, Esplanade, and The Lake Club, along with Bradenton and Sarasota.
02Never too late
Is it too late to learn piano as an adult?
No. Research finds that adults can learn to play well at any age, and the rewards, from a real sense of achievement to greater confidence, are well documented.
For most adults the true obstacle is not ability, it is time. A short, steady practice habit beats long sessions that never happen. Dr. Hohlstein helps you set goals that fit a full life, so the piano becomes something you look forward to rather than one more thing to fall behind on.
03Coming back
Returning to the piano after years away
Returning students are some of the most rewarding to teach. The muscle memory is often still there, waiting, and it tends to come back faster than you expect. Lessons usually start by finding where you are now, dusting off the technique you already have, and choosing music that makes you want to sit down and play. One of Dr. Hohlstein's students returned after sixty years away and is now playing pieces she once thought were out of reach.
04How lessons work
What lessons look like
Lessons are private and in person, one student at a time. Depending on your goals, time at the piano might include:
- Repertoire chosen around the music you want to play
- Technique and hand position that make playing feel easier
- Reading music and rhythm, built up at a comfortable pace
- Music theory, so you understand what you are playing
- A practice plan that fits the time you actually have
Lesson length and frequency are arranged to suit your schedule, and you can talk it all through at the free trial.
05Your teacher
Taught by Dr. Marjorie Hohlstein
Dr. Hohlstein holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and has taught for more than forty years. Adult beginners and returning players are a real part of her studio, taught with the same care as any student preparing for the concert stage.
06In their words
Adults who thought they had missed their chance
Away from piano lessons for 60 years, I never thought I could learn again, until I met Marjorie. In just a few lessons she taught me how to practice effectively, improve my tempo, and tackle pieces I thought were impossible. Her encouragement keeps me motivated every day.
07Questions
Adult piano lessons, answered
Is it too late to learn piano as an adult?
It is not. Research shows adults can learn to play well at any age. The main challenge is usually finding time rather than ability, and lessons here are built around a practice habit that fits a busy life.
I have never played before. Can I really start from zero?
Yes. Adult beginners are welcome and common in the studio. Lessons start with the basics, at a pace that feels comfortable, and build steadily from there.
I played years ago and stopped. Where do I begin?
Returning students often progress quickly because earlier training tends to come back. Lessons begin by finding your current level, refreshing technique, and choosing music you are excited to play.
Do I need to read music?
Not to begin. Reading music is taught step by step, and many adults are surprised how soon it starts to click.
How much do I need to practice?
Short and consistent beats long and rare. Even a little focused practice most days makes a clear difference, and Dr. Hohlstein will help you find a routine that fits your week.
Do I need my own piano?
You will need an instrument to practice on at home. A digital piano with weighted keys is a good starting point, and an acoustic piano is ideal if you have one. Dr. Hohlstein is happy to advise.
Are lessons in person or online?
Lessons are in person at Dr. Hohlstein's home studio in Lakewood Ranch, serving adults from Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton, and Sarasota.
